God Directs Our Paths
There is great wisdom and consolation for leaders in Jeremiah 1:4-10. God knew
us before the world was formed, before we were conceived He had holy plans for
us. God says to Jeremiah - to each one of us, "I'll tell you where to go and
you'll go there. I'll tell you what to say and you'll say it. Don't be afraid of
a soul. I'll be right there, looking after you." (1:7-8)
Our Heavenly Father knows the intention of our hearts - the places where we
force our will and the sin we so foolishly attempt to hide. The Lord knows when
we ask Him to bless our plans instead of patiently waiting for the wisdom,
knowledge and discernment He promises to provide. He knows us.
God directs our paths; He puts His will and plans in our hearts; His words in
our mouths. We must continually be watchful and sensitive to the Holy Spirit in
order to maintain hearts that are prepared to receive God's will, ears that are
open to His word, and minds that submit to His direction. Put simply: its up to
us to obey.
Steve Jones, who spoke God's Word so authoritatively at Council, challenged all
of us with two vivid illustrations. The first was to place some kind of brick on
our pillows each morning to remind us to ask God every evening to reveal
anything in our lives that might become a barrier to our relationship with Him.
The second was to ask God every morning, immediately upon awaking, "Lord, what
do You want me to do today?" And then doing just that. Consistently practicing
those disciplines reinforces our obedience.
Serving as president of C.U. is not about what I want. It's not about a plan or
a program or an event. God directed this in His plans before I was ever born.
His will, not mine, is preeminent and is dependent only on obedience. I am fully
committed to such obedience.
My greatest responsibility - and yours as well - is to listen to God through His
Word and His Spirit and then to obey. In accepting the responsibility - as
formidable as it might be - I am confident that God will "be right there,
looking after me."
